We all love a good book.  Well, i don't but i know alot of other people do.  Here's some books we hope you'll find quaint.

In January 2009, Peter Owen Publishers are re-launching perhaps their most famous publication, The Man Who Planted Trees. Jean Giono's poignant 1954 fable about reafforestation comes not only with a limited editon woodcut illustration but comes with a commendation from the Woodland Trust, having been printed with vegetable-based inks from traceably sustainable sources on paper sourced from well-managed forests under the environmental standard ISO 14001.

Giono’s wonderful story centres around a shepherd, Elzear Bouffier, whom Giono hoped would inspire a reafforestation programme that would renew the whole earth: both parable and manual it pits the tree-planter against the makers of war as well as showing all that is best in man’s relationship with nature and his fellow man. Accompanied by Michael McCurdy’s beautiful woodcuts it is not only a modern classic, but a unique one. For this we have received the following commendation from the Woodland Trust:

‘For Elzeard Bouffier the land was dying for want of trees, his drive and ambition are reminiscent of our founder Kenneth Watkins and underline the principles by which the Woodland Trust operates. A truly enlightening read and a major advocate for woodland creation’ - The Woodland Trust

Anne Jones is a gifted and experienced healer. She regularly tours the world (America, South Africa, Australia and the Far East) lecturing, running workshops and giving healing. She is the founder of Ripple UK Ltd and Hearts and Hands, an international healing organisation.  Anne also donates loads of time and money to charity.  Quaint thinks everyone needs to be more like Anne Jones!

Quaint caught up with the cat from Book Guild Publishing.  It told us there was a lot of terrific books on offer this Autumn/Winter.  Of all the books the cat spoke about we thought the following sounded most interesting.  Jesus the Man (Was there a historical Jesus?) and God by Any Other Name Revealed in Myth from the Philosophy and Religion section .  Both by author Christina Sewell.  WITHIN THE SECRET STATE (a disturbing study of the use and misuse of power) from the Politics and Current Affairs section.  by Peter Evens.  And if you want to buy some fiction try THE NEW REVELUTION by Fredwyn Haynes. (Britain in the 2020’s with a neo-fascist government) If you’re in the mood for something fun try NOT FOR WIMPS (men and the ageing game) by John Parry

In For The Kill by Pauline Rowson

This is a compelling, harrowing thriller about what happens to one man when someone steals his identity? For Alex Albury the nightmare that destroyed his life will only end in death; his or his tormentor’s. With its twists and turns the reader is sucked into a frightening and totally believable world of deception, betrayal and revenge in a highly topical story that has its roots deep in the past.

Alex Albury has it all: a successful public relations business, a luxurious house, a beautiful wife and two sons. Then one September morning the police burst into his home and arrest him. Now, three and a half years later, newly released from Camp Hill Prison on the Isle of Wight, Alex is intent on finding the man who framed him for fraud and embezzlement. All he knows is his name: James Andover. But who is he? Where is he? Alex embarks on his quest to track down Andover, but with the trail cold he is frustrated at every turn. Worse, he finds himself under suspicion by the police. The pressure is on and Alex has to unearth the answers and quick. But time is running out. For Alex the future looks bleak and soon he is left with the option - to kill or be killed.

Remembering Perfection
Jessica McGregor Johnson
Ecademy Press
ISBN 9781905823451
£12.99

Jessica McGregor Johnson spent four years working and living in an ashram, an Indian spiritual retreat. She emerged ready to begin a completely new life having studied and lived spiritual principles such as being real, living in the present moment and having patience. But putting the principles she had learnt in the confines of the ashram into the reality of everyday life would be a major challenge.

Jessica McGregor Johnson: “I was trying to work out how to live these principles within my everyday life at the same time as everything seemingly was going haywire. I had too much stress all at once: I had come out of the ashram, moved to a new country and had a new partner. I literally wrote myself out of a hole.”

Remembering Perfection deals with how to use contemplation, and how to have compassion and send blessings, not judgement. “We have free will with regards to our attitude to what is happening around us,” Jessica explains. “The feeling of things being out of control has hit a lot of people with what is going on in the world. People ask me how they can possibly live with this spiritual focus when their livelihood and in some cases their family's happiness seems threatened. I explain the importance of where our focus is and how practising gratitude and looking for the gift in every situation can help us handle challenging situations with more confidence."

Jessica shares her personal experiences in Remembering Perfection, a practical guide of how to embody spiritual principles to achieve a happier and more fulfilled life.

“Self-honesty is the first step,” she says. “I realised that rather on focusing on all that was wrong, I could use all that I had learnt in the ashram and help myself by creating a balanced mental state, no matter what was happening in my life .”

If you knew you were about to have your last meal ever, what would it be? Would you stuff yourself full of all that was bad for you or demand a Michelin star meal. Would you get a craving for something obscure like a jar of pickles or lose your appetite altogether?

Since the reinstatement of the death penalty in 1977, nearly 400 inmates on Texas Death Row have faced this question.
