Tell me a little something about the movies ...
Across multiple movie genres and filmmaking techniques, this year’s holiday blockbuster movies demonstrate the wide-range of entertainment that is shaped with Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADSK) software. Filmmakers are using Autodesk’s animation, visual effects and colour grading tools to enhance their creative process and enable sophisticated storytelling.

Visual effects (VFX) studio CIS Vancouver led the visual effects effort on the teen vampire box office bonanza, Twilight. Full of atmospheric effects, the 250-shot Twilight required heavy rotoscoping and compositing to incorporate hyperkinetic vampire motion and augment stormy weather. For the previsualisation stage, CIS extensively relied upon Autodesk Maya 3D modelling, animation and rendering software. A scene set in a ballet studio filled with mirrors created complex visual challenges, requiring tracking of more than half a dozen reflective bounces between the mirrors. “Using Maya to conduct multiple camera pre-tests from many angles, we were able to save the production team hours of set time,” said Geoffrey Hancock, CIS visual effects supervisor. “Autodesk’s powerful tools gave us the opportunity to focus on the creative challenges of this scene rather than the technical ones.”

CIS also worked on the historical drama Changeling. As the lead VFX house, CIS’ dedicated team of artists worked diligently with a shortened schedule to ready the film for its Cannes Film Festival premiere and subsequent theatrical release. CIS used Maya for virtually all the modelling and animation, and Autodesk Inferno visual effects software for matte paintings. VFX Supervisor Geoffrey Hancock stated, “The graphics speed, multiple iteration-ability and overall robustness of Inferno was invaluable to our pipeline. The film’s subtle visual effects allow audiences to become fully absorbed in the story. We actually enjoyed the constraints of creating a believable and historically accurate environment. It was so refreshing to create invisible effects, not solely for the spectacle.”

In an imaginary animal universe, DreamWorks Animation’s dazzling computer-generated (CG) animated film Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa also relied upon Maya to tell its story. “Maya gives us a lot of control over our particle simulations. The software is deep in its programmability and very scalable for all kinds of visual effects, from the down-and-dirty two-day effect to the dam-breaking effect that took four months to perfect. Maya covers our needs on both ends of the spectrum and we rely upon it more and more every year,” said Scott Peterson, Head of Effects for Madagascar 2. DreamWorks turned to the Autodesk Lustre system for the film’s colour grading, tailoring the film-look to augment the adventure of a motley crew of New York Zoo animals.

For the instant cult classic City of Ember, lead VFX house Luma Pictures used Maya and several plug-in solutions including mental ray and RealFlow. These tools were used to create a fantastical world filled with complex CG water systems, full subterranean CG sets and an enormous CG mole. Payam Shohadai, executive VFX supervisor at Luma Pictures, remarked, “Maya is the backbone of our entire VFX pipeline. Its amazing power and scripting flexibility allowed us to bring the City of Ember to life in ways no one thought possible – Maya is truly indispensable.”

JP Distribution is pleased to announce the TriGrip Stand Clamp from award winning manufacturer Lastolite.

Since its launch in 2002 the TriGrip has gone from strength to strength and is still an extremely popular product in the market today. This new bracket offers new and existing TriGrip users even more versatility when positioning their reflector or diffuser panel. The bracket will be particularly useful for photographers who work alone and need to support their TriGrip on a handle, lighting stand or tripod.

East to use, the moulded handle on the TriGrip simply slots into the bracket and is then secured firmly using the attached strap. The ball joint connector then allows the photographer to position the TriGrip at whatever position or angle they wish.

An extra feature of the bracket is a flash gun attachment arm so that the photographer can bounce light off the reflectors surface or shoot through a diffuser panel.

Thales UK today announces the successful first system flight trials of the WATCH-KEEPER unmanned air vehicle (UAV), with the autonomous flight taking place under the system guidance of the WATCHKEEPER ground control software and fully integrated within the ground control station (GCS).

These trials of the UAV, which operates with dual payloads, will continue into 2009, and will validate the key mission system capa¬bility of the WATCHKEEPER system.

This is another significant step forward in the WATCHKEEPER programme and follows closely from the first successful flight trials of the WATCHKEEPER air vehicle in April 2008 and the demonstration of the WATCHKEEPER Automatic Take-Off and landing (ATOL) capability in August 2008

The control software has been produced by Thales UK at its Crawley facility. The GCS has been designed and manufactured in the UK by UAV Tactical Systems Ltd (U-TacS), the Thales UK/Elbit Systems joint company site in Leicester.

During the first successful flight trials at Elbit’s facilities in Israel, the WATCHKEEPER UAV was controlled by the WATCHKEEPER GCS using Thales-developed software and performed an automatic take-off and landing. This initial stage of systems trials will pro-vide an essential link between the various sub-system level trials and the full WATCHKEEPER systems trials to be undertaken in the UK next year.

The WATCHKEEPER system test programme includes:

• System command and control of UAV from WATCHKEEPER GCS
• Initial assessment of system data link performance
• Dual payload installation
• Generation and exploitation of payload imagery (the ‘imagery chain’)
• WATCHKEEPER avionics system trials (IFF and airborne radio assessment)
• Further systems ATOLS assessment
• Electrical power system performance with dual payloads installed
Mark Barclay, Managing Director of Thales UK’s aerospace business, says: “This is another major step forward on the WATCHKEEPER programme and one of a number of trials that are scheduled over the coming months. We have made steady progress since the contract was signed in 2005 and I am particularly pleased that Thales and our external partners continue to deliver in line with the agreed customer schedule. ”

WATCHKEEPER will provide the UK armed forces with an essential Intelligence, Sur-veillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) capability, and will be a key component of the UK's network enabled capability (NEC). Thales UK, as Prime Con¬trac-tor for the WATCHKEEPER programme, will deliver equipment, training and facil¬ities, with the capability planned to enter service from 2010.

Production of the WATCHKEEPER system will take place at U-TacS (UAV Tactical Sys¬tems Ltd), the Thales UK and Elbit Systems joint company, based in Leicester.

Skype & The Viral Factory Laugh In The Face Of The Credit Crunch With The Laughter Chain...

Skype and The Viral Factory have teamed up to laugh in the face of the credit crunch by sparking a humour epidemic.

The Laughter Chain www.skypelaughterchain.com is an interactive viral which links together footage of hundreds of people laughing, and encourages the viewer not only to watch the viral, but to join in and record their reactions via a webcam.

To date the campaign has been viewed nearly 9 million times, with an average of 3-5,000 new views each day, and the Chain is now 90 minutes long.

The Viral Factory created a widget which uniquely allows viewers to embed the player into their own blog, social network profile page or website of their choice and share the Chain with others.

The Laughter Chain is designed to raise awareness of Skype’s free video-calling feature.

Inspired by the famous laughter films that rank within the You-Tube All-time Most Viewed Top 100, The Laughter Chain currently stars over 500 videos from people all over the world.

The viral features many ‘weblebrities’ with extensive You Tube followings, including bizarre giggler Nassima from France and the hilarious Comedy Barn Dad from Tennessee.

There are masses of stories about consumer apathy towards celebrities featured in adverts (too right), disenchantment with advertising generally/online advertising budgets increasing/ threat of Sky +/ad budgets free-falling, and of course the rise of user-generated content/social networking etc. The Viral Factory believe there is going to be a dramatic increase in this kind of interactive viral advertising, which allows brands an almost one-on-one relationship with consumers, and gives very accurate figures on how many people look at it, respond to it etc.

It is also just a lovely celebration of weird and wonderful laughs, and is a nice bit of media cheer amongst all this doom and gloom!

We’ve also put together a list of -

Laughter facts

Research by scientists suggests that we ‘catch’ laughter from each other because our brains are programmed to join in.

• 15 minutes of laughter equals the benefit of 2 hours sleep.
• On average we laugh 17 times a day.
• One good belly laugh burns off three and a half calories.
• It’s been medically proven that laughter is an effective painkiller.
• Laughter helps prevent heart disease, lowers levels of stress hormones and strengthens the immune system.
• Laughter has positive effects on all the major body systems – respiratory, circulatory and cardiac.
• The funny bone is not a bone, it’s a nerve.
• People who study laughter are known as Gelotologists.
• People smile only 35% as much as they think they do.
• Research suggests that up to 80% of laughter isn’t caused by humour at all, it’s down to mood - tense, nervous, happy or excited feelings all cause outbursts.
• The US scientist, Igor Krishtafovich, however, has come up with a formula for would-be comedians to find out whether a joke is funny or not:

HE = PI x C/T + BM

HE – (humour effectiveness) equals PI – (personal involvement) multiplied by C – (complexity of a joke) and T – (time spent by a person solving a joke) Plus BM – (background mood).

The Laughter Chain can be found at www.skypelaughterchain.com.

Quaint's Editor Says: The last time i shot a wedding {i'm also a photographer} i got about 3,000 photos. I popped them all onto a flash drive and sent it to the new couple.  As an editor, one of the Quaint Photographers always uses his memory flash drive when he brings sample photos over.  This saves on waste of discs. When you burn onto disc, Especially CDs, most can not be reused and you rarely use up all the space allotted on recordable CDs & DVDs.   So, as an editor and a photographer and someone who kinda cares about the planet, I say memory sticks are far better than discs for almost anything office & business related. I also keep all my music on them.
